Did you know that many visible signs of ageing can be traced back to volume loss? As the facial fat atrophies, we start to develop folds around the nose and mouth, and cheeks look a little hollow. This lost volume can be replaced by dermal fillers which results in filling of grooves, smoothening of wrinkles, augmenting the lips, and restoring a more youthful appearance. Dermal filler is widely chosen therapy across the world for facial rejuvenation and reversing the signs of ageing, as it is a quick, safe and effective way to look younger.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are composed of gel-like material that are injected below the skin to restore volume loss, smooth out lines and wrinkles, and enhance facial contours.
As we age, the facial bones undergo resorption, subcutaneous fat decreases, and the ligaments loosen. As a result, there occurs deflation and sagging of the face. We develop hollowness and deep folds. The shape of the face changes with the lower part of the face becoming more bulky.
Dermal fillers help in restoring the lost volume and restructuring the lost shape of our face.

Pain at the injection site may be ameliorated by use of an anaesthetic ointment to numb the skin. The fillers are pre-mixed with lignocaine (anaesthetic agent), so the injections are usually easily tolerated.

Results are assessed, and additional filler is injected where ever required.
Depending on the number of areas to be treated, the whole process may be as short as 15 minutes, or as long as an hour.

How are fat injections used as dermal fillers?

Your own body’s fat can be harvested, processed, and injected as dermal fillers to bring out similar effects as those by hyaluronic acid.

What is the procedure for fat injections?

Fat injection is a more elaborate procedure than hyaluronic acid fillers. First step is to identify a donor area from which fat can be harvested. This is usually the abdomen or buttocks. Using a liposuction cannula, fat is removed from the donor area, it is processed in a machine, and then injected in the face.
The grafted fat then has to redevelop a blood supply in order to survive. About 50% of the fat injected will survive, and the surviving fat will last forever.

What are the results of fat injection?

The results of fat injection are less predictable. Usually, more than one sittings are required to get the desired results.
Fat injections are associated with more discomfort, both in the recipient as well as in the donor area. This is a minor surgical procedure that can be performed in the surgeon's treatment room or in an operating room.
