Warts are growths on the skin caused by human papilloma virus (HPV). Warts are round or oval shaped, varying in size from few millimetres to few centimeters. They are usually asymptomatic, but sometimes, may be associated with pain and / or itching. The most common areas of the body affected include hands, feet, face, forehead and genital areas.

They are usually harmless, however can be disfiguring and embarrassing, and occasionally they itch or hurt (particularly on the feet). An important fact about warts is that they are infectious and have a tendency to spread locally and from one body part to another, and also from one person to another. What is the treatment?

Warts are usually burnt precisely by ablative CO2 laser or radiofrequency (RF) ablation.
Steps of the procedure :

1. The area is cleaned thoroughly
2. Local anaesthesia is injected for pain relief.
3. Using the machine, the lesion is burnt layer by layer
4. There might be some bleeding during the procedure which is controlled by pressure hemostasis.
5. Anti-bacterial cream is applied.

Is the procedure painful?

The procedure is required to be done under anaesthesia, either topical or local injectable, depending on the number of lesions and depth of lesions.

How many sessions are required for the treatment?

Wart removal is usually a single session treatment.

How long does the procedure takes?

The procedure takes around 45-90 minutes.

How many days does it take for the skin to heal?

There occurs crust formation 2-3 days post procedure, which then falls off on its own in next 5-7 days. So it takes around 7-10 days in total for complete recovery of the skin. It is advisable not to pick the crusts to prevent scar formation.

Is there any risk of scarring?

Superficial lesions do not leave any scar. however, deeper lesions may leave faint superficial scars.

Are the results permanent?

Yes, once treated adequately, the results are permanent, however, in some individuals, warts may recur and may require two or more treatment sessions.
