Our blood is made up of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. Plasma, is the component of the blood in which all the blood cells are suspended and carried to different parts of the body. Platelets are the cells responsible for maintaining hemostasis, i.e., they control the bleeding by forming a clot and repairing the damage.
Platelets are a reservoir of various growth factors that stimulate tissue recovery and healing by increasing blood flow and cytokines. These growth factors are also responsible for stimulating and enhancing hair follicle function.

What is PRP?

PRP is a part of blood rich in platelets and devoid of red blood cells and white blood cells.
PRP contains platelet concentration that is 4-5 times the normal concentration. Since the platelets are a reservoir of essential growth factors, PRP is typically a concentrated solution of growth factors which can stimulate the hair follicle cells and promote hair growth.

How does PRP work?

PRP is rich in various growth factors, namely vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), Platelet derived growth factor (PDGF), Fibroblast growth factor (FGF), and Insulin like growth factor (IGF). These molecules bring about the following effects -

  1. Stimulation of the hair follicular stem cells to convert from their dormant state to an active state
  2. Stimulation of the growth of blood vessels around the hair follicles

These physiological effects help in reducing hair fall, increasing the thickness of the hair and promoting hair growth.

Who is a good candidate for PRP therapy?

Anyone with excessive hair fall, hair thinning or reduced hair density can undergo PRP treatment. It is especially very useful in cases of patterned hair loss, both in males and females.

How is the procedure done?

Approximately 8 ml of your blood sample is withdrawn in a vial. It is placed in a centrifugation machine. This is machine that spins around very quickly, causing the blood components to separate. The separation process takes around 15 minutes.
The PRP is separated into a syringe and is used for the therapy.
Typically, 4 ml - 5 ml of injectable PRP is considered as the optimum volume for injecting into the scalp.

The PRP Procedure

  1. The area where hair volume has to be restored is marked out.
  2. The marked area on your head is anaesthetised using a local anaesthesia.
  3. A disinfectant is applied on the area which is to be treated.
  4. The PRP is injected into the dermis and subcutaneous layers of your scalp.
  5. The site is then cleaned thoroughly.
How much time does it take for each session?

PRP therapy is a quick procedure taking just 30-40 minutes.

What should I expect during the recovery period?

There is no downtime after a PRP procedure. You can get back to your routine activities immediately after the procedure.

How many sessions are required for best results?

On an average, 6-8 sessions done 1-1.5 months apart are sufficient to give desired results.

Are there any risks or side effects?

PRP is virtually an “organic” treatment as your own blood is being processed and injected back into your body. So there are no chances of any adverse effects.
However, one may experience mild temporary effects due the injections per se, which may include slight tenderness and soreness, minimal pain, and pinpoint bleeding in the areas where injections were delivered. You may also experience a feeling of ‘tightness’ on your scalp for a day after the procedure. A few patients also complain of a headache for a day post the procedure.

What are the advantages of PRP procedure?

The advantages of PRP therapy for hair include:

  1. Minimal after effects limited to slight pain for 1-2 days.
  2. Very less recovery time. One can resume their daily routine immediately post procedure.
  3. Minimally invasive procedure requiring only the injections.
  4. The treatment process is quick and is usually over within 30 mins to 45 mins.
Are the results permanent?

A full round of PRP hair therapy (which can consist of 6-8 sessions) can make your hair thick, increase hair growth, and arrest hair loss for sometime. The results can be enhanced and maintained by regular use of anti hair loss serums provided by the doctor.
