Microdermabrasion, also popular known as skin polishing, is a minimally invasive procedure used to renew overall skin tone and texture. It can help improve chronic sun damage, wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, acne scarring, melasma, and other skin conditions.

What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a treatment done to gently exfoliate the skin cells of the uneven, outer, thicker layer, by using an abrasive instrument.

How does microdermabrasion work?

The procedure involves using a special instrument with an abrasive surface to gently remove the thick outer layer of the skin and rejuvenate it.

What are the benefits of this treatment?

This type of skin rejuvenation is used to treat light scarring, discolouration, sun damage and stretch marks.

Microdermabrasion can -

  1. Improve age spots and blackheads
  2. Improve hyperpigmentation (patches of darkened skin)
  3. Exfoliate your skin, resulting in a refreshed appearance
  4. Lessen the appearance of stretch marks
  5. Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
  6. Reduce or eliminate enlarged pores
  7. Treat acne and the scars left by acne

Microdermabrasion helps to stimulate collagen and elastin production, which results in a younger looking skin. Collagen is a protein that makes the skin firm and smooth. As we age, the collagen production decreases gradually, resulting in looser, uneven skin.

Who is a good candidate for microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a safe procedure for all skin types and colours. You may opt for this procedure if you have any of the following skin concerns:

  1. Fine lines and wrinkles
  2. Hyperpigmentation, age spots and brown spots
  3. Enlarged pores and blackheads
  4. Acne and acne scars
  5. Stretch marks
  6. Dull-looking skin complexion
  7. Uneven skin tone and texture
  8. Melasma
  9. Sun damage
How is the procedure done?

Microdermabrasion is an in-office procedure that usually takes about 30-45 minutes.
It’s not a painful procedure so does not require anaesthesia.

During the procedure, you’ll be seated in a reclining chair. The face will be cleansed. Your provider will use a handheld device to gently exfoliate the outer layer of skin in the targeted areas. At the end of the treatment, a moisturiser as well as sunscreen will be applied to your skin.

There are two different ways to do the procedure:

Diamond-tip hand piece

A diamond-tip hand piece is designed to gently exfoliate dead cells in your skin. At the same time, it will suction them off immediately. The depth of the abrasion may be affected by the pressure applied on the hand piece as well as how long the suction is allowed to remain on the skin.

Crystal microdermabrasion

Crystal microdermabrasion uses a crystal-emitting hand piece to gently spray on fine crystals to rub away outer layers of the skin. Like the diamond-tip hand piece, dead skin cells are suctioned off right away.
The crystals used are of aluminium oxide, which is an inert molecule.

What should I expect during my microdermabrasion recovery?

There is no down time after microdermabrasion procedure. You can resume your daily activities immediately.
It is advisable that the skin is kept well hydrated by use of a good moisturiser, and proper sun protection taken to enhance and prolong the results.

What results should I expect after microdermabrasion?

You can see noticeable results immediately after the procedure. The skin looks cleaner, healthier, and feels more smooth, soft and supple. The blemishes fade away, pores are deep cleansed, giving you a radiant and fresh appearance!

How many sessions do I need to see good results?

Depending on the severity of skin damage, one may require a series of 6-10 sessions to see remarkable differences.

How frequently can I get the treatment done?

Microdermabrasion may be done every 2 weeks initially till the desired results are achieved and then monthly once for maintenance.

What are the risks of microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is one of the safest aesthetic treatment. Any discomfort experienced is usually short lasting. This can include slight redness which should subside within a few hours.
Be sure to use a good moisturiser and sunscreen, especially immediately following a microdermabrasion session.
