A dermal filler medical procedure includes the following steps:
Step 1 – Facial assessment & mapping. The doctor will evaluate your facial appearance and examine the areas of your face to be augmented. Strategic points on your face will be marked as the appropriate injection sites for the filler. Photographs will be taken of the areas to be treated.
Step 2 – Cleansing & anaesthetising. The injection sites will be cleansed with alcohol swabs.
Pain at the injection site may be ameliorated by use of an anaesthetic ointment to numb the skin. The fillers are pre-mixed with lignocaine (anaesthetic agent), so the injections are usually easily tolerated.
Step 3 – The injectable filler of Hyaluronic acid gel is carefully administered at the pre-determined sites. The improvement is visible instantly. One can instantly see the lifting effect, contouring and re-positioning of the facial tissues, and filling of grooves and lines.
Any lumps or bumps are smoothened out by gently massaging the area. Results are assessed, and additional filler is injected where ever required.
Depending on the number of areas to be treated, the whole process may be as short as 15 minutes, or as long as an hour.
Step 4 – Clean up & recovery. Once satisfactory results are obtained, the face is again cleaned and antibacterial cream applied.
You can resume most activities right away, but it is generally recommended that you avoid intense physical activity for the first 24-48 hours to minimise swelling and bruising.
There might be slight redness and swelling at the injection points, which subsides in couple of days.

Your own body’s fat can be harvested, processed, and injected as dermal fillers to bring out similar effects as those by hyaluronic acid. This is a common procedure performed using simple medical devices.
Fat injection is a more elaborate procedure than hyaluronic acid fillers. First step is to identify a donor area from which fat can be harvested. This is usually the abdomen or buttocks. Using a liposuction cannula, fat is removed from the donor area, it is processed in a machine, and then injected in the face.
The grafted fat then has to redevelop a blood supply in order to survive. About 50% of the fat injected will survive, and the surviving fat will last forever.
The results of fat injection are less predictable. Usually, more than one sittings are required to get the desired results.
Fat injections are associated with more discomfort, both in the recipient as well as in the donor area. This is a minor plastic surgery procedure that can be performed in the treatment room or in an operating room.
