Nails are reflection go health of our body. They are sometimes the most commonly ignored part of our routine care. But for dermatologists, various nail signs are important indicators of issues associated with skin and hair. Good nail care practices should be part of our daily regime. Here are few tips to keep your nails healthy.

The nails should be kept clean and dry.

They should be trimmed regularly using sharp nail scissors or clippers, and the tips should be slightly round for maximum strength.

The nails should be shaped and free of snags by filing with a nail filer.

Do not bite fingernails or remove the cuticle. Doing so can damage the nail.

Never use your nails as a tool like to open cans etc.

Toenails should also be trimmed regularly to minimise the risk of trauma and injury.

If toenails are thick and difficult to cut, soak your feet in warm salt water for 5 to 10 minutes to soften them, and then cut.

Avoid digging out ingrown toenails, especially if they are infected and sore. If you are suffering from an ingrown toenail, see a dermatologist for treatment.

Wear properly fitted shoes. Preferably have at least two pairs of shoes which you can use alternately each day.

When at the pool or in public showers, wear open foot wear like flip flops to reduce the risk of fungal infection of toenails.
